10 Ways to Protect Your Eyes This Summer


Now that the summertime has officially arrived it’s time to protect your eyes from the sun and other warm weather dangers.


Here are some pointers on remaining safe in the sun:


  1. Make sure your glasses provide 100% UV protection. If your sunglasses don’t protect against 100% of UV rays, they may be resulting in more harm than benefit.  Not to fear, proper UV blockage doesn’t mean a higher price – many reasonably priced brands provide full UV defense.

  2. Sport larger sunglasses. When selecting sun protection, think big. It’s advised to find shades with wraparound frames and wide lenses.

  3. Wear a wide brimmed hat. A wide brimmed hat will add an extra layer of defense against the sun’s rays.

  4. Sport sunglasses when the sun is hidden. Even when the sun is behind the clouds, harmful UV light is still able to peek through the clouds and do damage to your eyes. Even when you can’t see the sun, remember to keep protected.

  5. Keep sunglasses safe. Your sunglasses are a good friend and should be treated accordingly. It’s worthwhile to keep them in a closed place to keep them free from scratches, breaks and dirt.

  6. Keep hydrated. It’s important to keep your eyes hydrated. Drink a minimum of 8 cups of water each day to avoid dehydrated eyes and skin.

  7. Stay away from midday sun. Stay indoors as much as possible particularly between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm when the sun is at its strongest and the highest levels of UV are in the atmosphere.

  8. Consider polarized lenses. Polarized lenses minimize the glare from reflective surfaces such as water. Perfect for water sports, beaching or driving, they provide more comfort during outdoor activities.

  9. When participating in outdoor activities such as riding a bicycle, watching fireworks or hiking, make sure you protect your eyes as necessary to avoid eye injuries.

  10. Be careful with sunscreen. If applied too close to the eyes it can enter the eye and cause irritation and burning.
